Mediterranean Diet: There is more to food than flavor

March 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hello everybody,

I know I have neglected my blog during the past few weeks but I have been really busy preparing and doing presentations on nutrition. I’ll try to be more regular in the future.

Today the subject of my blog is about flavor. How many times, referring to food, have you said, ”this is so tasty”!, “I like it a lot”! Have you stopped to think that many of those times, the only quality we seem to appreciate in food is how good this or that product tastes? Well, unfortunately, quite often we make taste the only reason and motivation to ingest the product.

How about changing the question and asking yourself, “is this food really good for me or it just tastes good and that´s why I am eating it?

Remember that when we eat, we introduce in our body many substances that will influence our health in the short and long run. When we deal with nourishment, as well as with our lives, it would be interesting and intelligent to try to like those things that are good for us and end up disliking those that can harm us. That´s why we have a brain and the capacity to decide. Fortunately, nowadays, there is plenty of information out there to be able to make the right decision when it comes to putting food in our mouths.

Making happy our taste buds but unhappy our stomach, liver, kidneys, heart, and the rest of our organs because of the quality of food we choose, is not the way to go. Next time you choose your food, think about all this.

Have a great day,

    Speaking of flavor…

The prominent “Mediterranean” spices are cumin, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, anise, Spanish saffron, lemon, mint, parsley, garlic, dill, pepper, and sumac.

I wonder how much the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet are related to phytonutrients in these spices. Garlic is the best studied of the lot. For the others, we are just in the infancy of our understanding.
