Hello to every one,
Today, and for the next few days, I want to continue with our summer fruits subject as I deem it quite important. As I said in my yesterday’s blog, summer fruits are packed with high amounts of nutrients all extremely important to prevent disease.
Cherries
Cherries are a good option during summer time: its beta-carotene content protects your skin from the sun, and his contribution in fiber, water and low calories makes them an essential fruit if you are trying to lose weight.
Nutritional value
Cherries are an ideal if you are trying to lose weight since 83% of the edible portion is water. 120 grams have only 50 kilocalories; they also have 1.5 grams of fiber, which contributes to fill you up.
As in most fruits, calories in cherries come from their carbohydrates, especially fructose, the sugar in fruit.
As far as vitamins and minerals are concerned, we find powerful antioxidants such as beta-carotene that becomes vitamin A when your body needs it and vitamin C, which helps our cells to fight free radicals, a cause of aging. Cherries also contribute substantial amounts of potassium, a mineral that protects the heart and, in fewer quantities, with calcium and magnesium.
Cherries are also high in bioactive substances such as ellagic acid and antocianines; these substances are involved in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
When buying cherries
1. The texture of cherries needs to be firm and their skins smooth, shining and without bruises. Their stems should be green. Check that in the area of union between the stem and the fruit there is no mold.
2. You can keep cherries in the refrigerator for up two weeks.
3. You can find seasonal cherries from April until August.
4. Choose the darkest ones. The larger variety is tastier.
5. The best way to eat them is fresh, after washing them, as a snack or as dessert.
Have a healthy and wonderful day
